On November 16th 2008 the New York Times published a story written by travel writer Dave Gardetta. The article was about Mobile AL seen through the eyes of Gardetta. It was assigned by a professor at the University of South Alabama, and once it was discussed in class, differing opinions about how Mobile and surrounding areas were portrayed by this writer. The storytelling itself is not a boring read. Gardetta details much of the landscape and architecture that makes Mobile endearing. On one side, some people felt that Gardetta may have appeared to be condescending towards the traditionally southern city. The other side interprets the article as being slightly comedic, but maybe with some truths. Either way it is an interesting insight to how visitors view and retell stories of their Mobile moments. He discusses meetings with locals from NoJa, Tiny Diny, and the Battlehouse hotel. Here is the link for the article to read and develop your own opinion. Feel free to post comments or reactions to the article.
